How Composting Works
..Every living organism consumes nutrients and creates waste. To transform waste back to
nutrients and complete this cycle, nature uses the processes of decompostition and
evaporation. As is often the case, nature seems to be doing business in the best way
possible.

..Waste is mostly made up of moisture, and complex organic molecules. These molecules
contain plenty of carbon and hydrogen atoms. In a Sun-Mar, aerobic bacteria work to break
these molecules down by converting the hydrogen to water and the carbon to carbon dioxide.
Both are vented to atmosphere along with the moisture

..The small amount of remaining materials are largely oxidized salts which are collected by a
Sun-Mar in the finishing drawer.

..This is a valuable resource which is ideally suited for uptake by plants, and constitutes less
than 3% of the original volume of the waste.

..As well as ensuring an aerobic breakdown in the Bio-drum, Sun-Mar ensures an odor free
environment by engineering the air flow within the unit to maintain a partial vacuum at all
times. Air is being drawn in either by a fan (or on non-electric units by the vent chimney) over
the evaporating chamber and up the vent stack. Not only does this evaporate excess liquid,
but by continuously pulling air in we ensure no smell escapes from the unit.

..Evaporation is assisted on electric units by a thermostatically controlled heater in a sealed
compartment underneath the evaporating chamber.
Air flow in the Excel Unit
Barbara Curran
Excel, Installed 1999
Installed in cabin near Crystal
Lake, Laramie County, Wyoming

We installed the Excel unit in
November of 1999. Since the cabin
is without plumbing, the Excel was
and is ideal. It looks good and
everyone can use it without a
problem. It has serviced a large
group (12) on a given day and is
odorless. We are so glad we found
this system, otherwise we would
not have purchased our
"get-a-way".
